Minas Gerais
Minas Gerais is located in the Southeast region of Brazil along with Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It has an exuberant architecture collection, a diverse cuisine, museums and popular festivals. Minas Gerais has an important key role in Brazil's history. The search for gold, and diamonds gave name to the State Minas Gerais (General Mines) because of the richness of mines in the region.
There are hundreds of cities along the Estrada Real (Royal Routes) with diverse cultural, religious and colonial and baroque architecture characteristics to visit, as well as a natural beauty. Taking the Royal Route is one of the best ways to discover Minas Gerais.

History

During most of the 17th and 18th centuries, the gold explored in the interior lands of
Minas Gerais was transported throughout the Estrada Real (Royal Road). The road was built to facilitate movement and thus transportation, between the coast and the mining region.
The first route (Old Route) connected Ouro Preto, in Minas Gerais, to Paraty, in the south of Rio de Janeiro.
A smaller access road connected the main road to important villages of Sabara and Caete.
Some years later, the Portuguese government decided to encourage the opening of a second route (New Route) in the direction of the "land of mountains". A third route was also created (Diamond Road), linking Ouro Preto to Diamantina.

Today, a partnership between the Instituto Estrada Real and the government of Minas Gerais is reconstructing the entire route. The Old and New Routes together total 1,400 kilometers (870 mi.) and cross177 cities; the road reveals.

Belo Horizonte is the capital of Minas Gerais State and third largest city in Brazil. Belo Horizonte meets one of the finest architectural collections in the country. The city also offers excellent tourist infrastructure and is distinguished by the quality of services, making Belo Horizonte a good start in your trip at Minas Gerais.
